Fans and sports lovers jeered and shouted at soccer players who decided to take a knee during the National Anthem before the Wednesday match at the Toyota Stadium in Texas.
Before their Major League Soccer match kicked off, both players of the Dallas and the Nashville team decided to take a knee as the National Anthem played.
As the athletes took a knee, however, they were met with boos and jeers from their own fans while a handful of people started chanting ‘U-S-A’ in response to the kneeling.
One sports fan was reportedly also taken out of the stadium for hurling a bottle at the two teams as they took a knee side-by-side.
According to the reports, some 3,000 spectators were permitted to watch the match whereas attendees had to sign a liability waiver confirming they would not take legal action against the organizers if they contracted coronavirus.
Following the match, which the Nashville team had won with the score of 1-0, Dallas defender Reggie Cannon slammed the minority of fans who booed the players for expressing their beliefs.
“I think it was disgusting. I think it was absolutely disgusting. You got fans booing you for taking a stand for what they believe in when millions of other people support this cause,” Cannon said.
“And we have discussed with every other team and the league what we are going to do. And we got fans booing us in our own stadium. How disgraceful is that?”
As the Dallas defender added, everyone from the two teams, as well as the league, agreed to go forward with taking a knee prior to the match.
Allegedly, they also requested for the National Anthem not to be played ahead of the match due to the current circumstances in the country but their request was denied.
