It has been announced that Trump’s administration plans to extend numerous fast-track deportations across the United States.
Border officials will be given the power to deport migrants without a trial under new plans.
The American Immigration Council and American Civil Liberties Union vowed to sue to stop the plan.
The director of the ACLU’s Immigrants’ Rights Project, Omar Jawdat, described the policy as ‘unlawful.’ He told Fox News: “Immigrants who have lived here for years would be deported with less due process than people get in traffic court.”
Critics of the policy argue the plan grants too much power to Border Officials when it comes to deciding the fate of migrants.
The move comes one week after an unprecedented number of families arrived at the border from Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
Acting Homeland Security Secretary Kevin McAleenan said the ‘expedited removals’ were being brought in to tackle the ‘ongoing crisis on the southern border.’
He said the policy would help reduce a backlog of over 900,000 cases in courts and free up beds in detention facilities.
McAleenan also argued that giving border officials power would put less strain on immigration courts, where many cases take years to resolve.
One internet user said: “The trouble is 99% of these migrants are ‘economic migrants’, whose abuse of the system causes these huge backlogs. Clearly the various ‘refugee conventions’ need to re written as they were made for WWII and are not fit for purpose now.”
Another wrote: “Fantastic news. Keep it up.”
A third commented: “Unvetted power never ends well.”
