A boss of an insurance company has been suspended after making an inappropriate doughnut joke in which he shamed his employee.
James Conmy, a Senior Vice President of an international insurance business Guy Carpenter, has not only made a lewd joke but also shared it with his colleagues who didn’t see anything funny about it.
The incident happened on the day the businessman brought doughnuts into the office in order to celebrate his birthday together with his colleagues.
Instead of letting the employees have a go at the dessert, however, the Vice President wrote a “disturbing” e-mail to all of his colleagues. In the e-mail, Conmy joked:
“There are doughnuts on Alf’s desk as it is my birthday today. I hope people like Krispy Kremes – I know [name of a female colleague] enjoys a glazed ring.”
After making the lewd reference to the woman who works in his department, several employees accused the boss of crossing the line with his joke.
“This is absolutely totally unacceptable James,” the woman mentioned in his e-mail replied.
“There are limits to ‘jokes’ you can send at work copying in all colleagues – this is extremely rude and offensive. Please note that this will be forward to HR – HAPPY BIRTHDAY.”
Shortly after the incident was reported to the HR, a Guy Carpenter spokesperson confirmed that the boss has been suspended.
“We take all incidents of harassment very seriously and will not tolerate any behaviour that breaches our code of conduct,” they said in an interview with Insurance Post.
“Our first priority is our affected colleague and we are offering all the support and counseling we can. Those involved in sending and externally disseminating this email have been suspended from the firm pending further investigation.”
