Legendary boxing icon ‘Marvelous’ Marvin Hagler has reportedly passed away unexpectedly at his home.
The death of the former undisputed middleweight champion was announced by his wife, Kay Hagler, who confirmed that the 66-year-old boxer died “unexpectedly” at the age of 66.
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Mr. Marvelous dominated the middleweight boxing scene for seven years – from 1980 to 1987 – before his title as undisputed champion was taken away after his controversial defeat against Sugar Ray Leonard.
Throughout his successful boxing career, which lasted from 1973 to 1987, Hagler secured 62 wins (52 wins by KO) and suffered just 3 losses, making him one of the finest middleweight champions in history.
“I am sorry to make a very sad announcement. Today unfortunately my beloved husband Marvelous Marvin passed away unexpectedly at his home here in New Hampshire,” Kay announced on Sunday.
“Our family requests that you respect our privacy during this difficult time.”
Following the bombshell announcement, the social media was overflown with tributes from the boxer’s fans and other sports icons.
“Shocked and deeply saddened to hear of the passing of the incredible Marvellous Marvin Hagler. I’m honoured to have spent some amazing times with him. My heartfelt sympathies to his wife Kay and his family. Rest in Peace Champ,” Former WBA Barry McGuigan tweeted.
“I am crushed at the news that MARVELOUS MARVIN HAGLER has passed away! He was-in his prime-POUND4POUND-the best, going 11yrs in 38 fights w/o defeat! He dominated the MW division 4 a decade! 62 wins/52KOs-3 losses R.I.P. 4EVER CHAMPION-4EVER REMEMBERED,” ring announcer Michael Buffer expressed.
“Gutted to hear of the passing of Marvellous Marvin Hagler. One of the toughest, and best fighters in one of the greatest eras in boxing history. Hagler along with Leonard, Hearns & Duran – the Real Four Kings,” World champion boxing trainer Dave Coldwell penned.
Paying a tribute to the iconic boxing champion were also promoter Frank Warren, who called Hagler an “all-time great,” and promoter Eddie Hearn who revealed that Michael Buffer will be leading the ten-bell salute to the champion on Saturday.
