A boy with autism and couldn’t talk has said his very first full sentence only hours after undergoing stem-cell therapy in the United States.

It was in 2010 when Danny Bullen was diagnosed with autism after his communication and development stopped almost overnight.

In addition to not being able to speak, he also couldn’t use the toilet without assistance and had to attend a specialist school.

The 11-year-old from Tenerife traveled to Miami with his parents for the experimental treatment.

The next day, his mother, 45-year-old Irma Guanche, said Danny asked her “dame mas papas, por pavor,” which means “give me more potatoes, please.”

He has not said another full sentence since but his loving parents said they have been told it may take a few months before they notice huge changes.

Irma and her partner were able to pay for their child’s treatment after a fundraising page managed to raise around $9,000 in two months.

The parents are appealing again for Danny’s second therapy later this year. They came across the treatment online as advocates claim it causes “all autism symptoms to completely disappear.”

Previous studies have shown promise for stem-cell therapy as a possible treatment for autism but scientists stress it is in its early stages and more research is still needed.

Lee Bullen, Danny’s father, said: “Doctors introduced umbilical cord blood stem cells with cells from my son’s bone marrow and adipose tissue.

“He had his first treatment in March and the early signs are very encouraging. He is more alert and has already started to use a few new basic words and greetings.

“Undergoing stem cell therapy over two or three visits usually brings better results, which is why we hope to take Danny to the US at least twice.

“All symptoms related to ASD (autism spectrum disorder) have completely disappeared in many young patients.”

Another parent of a child with autism said her daughter experienced ‘modest results’ after undergoing stem-cell therapy.
