A 13-year-old boy has hit the headlines after volunteering to sell his stuff and work hard to afford to buy his mother a new car.
William Preston was watching inspiring YouTube videos in which he saw sons buy new rides for their mothers when he decided to help out his struggling mother, Krystal Preston.
Ms. Preston, who is a single mum-of-three, had been having a hard time paying for all the bills and making ends meet. On top of that, she also ended up without a car.
And so, young William, who does housework and yard work for his neighbors to earn some extra cash, decided to collect enough money to buy his mother a used car.
“I saw on YouTube where people get their mom a car and then surprise her with it,” William said in an interview with KOLO-TV. “I wanted to do that.”
After spotting a 1999 white Chevrolet Metro for sale, the young man contacted the seller and begged her to sell him the car.
“It was really cheap so I asked her if I could trade my Xbox for it or earn it, and at first she said no and after she thought about it, then she said yes,” the 13-year-old revealed.
After arranging everything with the seller, William was thrilled to surprise his mother with the new ride.
“‘Mom, I got you a car’ — and she didn’t believe me,” the boy recalled.
Speaking of her eldest son’s surprise, Krystal said: “I lost it, I bawled, I was just like, there’s no way. And then she gave me the keys and the paperwork.”
While the 20-year-old car could use some work, Krystal said that her new ride is simply perfect.
“At my low point, here comes my son,” the mum-of-three added. “Everybody goes through rough patches in their life, but there’s good that can come from any situation as long as somebody with a heart does it.
“The fact that my kid did this, I’m proud, but as a mom, I’m supposed to be able to take care of my kids. I’m supposed to do this, not the other way around.”
