Every parent can testify to the fact that babies can be too much to calm down at times.
No matter what you do – change their diapers, give them a fresh feeder of milk, rock them, sing to them or take them out in the open – they just continue crying.
Oakley Peterson was in one of those situations where babies refuse to stop crying when she was babysitting her neighbor’s infant Alek.
Oakley, from Salt Lake City, Utah, tried every trick in the book but was unable to calm little Alek down.
The baby was just crying and it seemed impossible to put him to sleep. It was when her son Welles, who suffers from Down syndrome, volunteered to soothe the baby.
According to Oakley, six-year-old Welles is blessed with ‘magical’ abilities to understand the emotional state of other people and is always ready to help people going through a rough patch.
A social media post by Oakley described how Welles tried to comfort his aunt while she was having a bad time.
Oakley wrote: “At every family reunion or big dinner, he finds the person struggling. My sister was pregnant and knew her baby would pass away shortly after birth.
“Usually, I can’t get Welles to sit still. But he would just sit with her and hold her.
“He knows how to sit with someone in their grief… individuals with Down syndrome can feel other people’s emotions in a way that’s impossible for the rest of us.”
It was due to Welles’ ability to understand the emotional state of others that he asked his mom to let him calm Alek down. And his magic worked again.
The child stopped crying as soon as Welles held him.
“Alek would not calm down. Nothing I did would calm him,” Oakley said. She caught the scene on camera and shared the video on social media, where it went viral in no time.
“I sat watching… thinking yet again… man, this kid is magical,” Oakley captioned the video.
Welles even helped get Alek his pacifier back when it fell out of his mouth.
The two are not related by blood but anyone seeing them would think Welles is the elder brother taking care of his baby brother.
Oakley has a Facebook page named “Nothing Down About It” where she shares videos, pictures, and stories of Welles and her family.
Her page focuses on how adorable Welles is and how he has made life all the more beautiful for her and her family.
