Nolan Scully was a happy and fun loving child.
But he was only two years old when he started to feel unwell. His parents thought it was a cold at first but when it wouldn’t go away, they brought him to a hospital.
His doctor couldn’t tell what was wrong and decided to run some tests. After a few days, results showed Nolan had a rare type of cancer called rhabdomyosarcoma.
This type of cancer attacks soft tissues in his body and he needed to start treatment right away.
At the age of two, Nolan already needed radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and more. It was incredibly hard for his body and it made him feel weaker than before.
But the first round of treatments only had a small effect. Doctors needed to keep on trying. Cancer started to spread despite multiple rounds of treatment.
Eventually, the doctor said there was nothing they could do. The best option would be to stop giving treatment and make the child comfortable during his last hours.
Nolan spent his time watching videos on YouTube and playing with his family. He said he wanted to be a policeman when he grew up.
Ruth, his mother, organized something with the local police department. The town police commissioner visited the young boy and swore Nolan in as a sergeant. He also gave him a police uniform, making Nolan very happy during his final hours.
After the police commissioner left, the little boy started getting weaker. He closed his eyes and Ruth gathered strength to say goodbye to her son.
Everyone surrounded Nolan, whose eyes were closed. He was struggling to breathe and doctors found one of his lungs collapsed.
Ruth hugged Nolan and he opened his eyes. He said: “I love you, mommy.”
He then closed his eyes and never opened them again. After half an hour, he passed away.
Rest in peace, Nolan.
