A 12-year-old boy has been given the all-clear from cancer after his mother fundraised enough money and they flew to Turkey for treatment.
In 2015, Charley was diagnosed with brain tumor medulloblastoma when he was only 8 years old. He had surgery to remove the mass, followed by numerous rounds of radiation and four stem cell transplants.
However, tumors came back in two places on his spine last year. He underwent two rounds of chemo but the tumors only doubled in size.
Toni Ilsley, his mother, researched other treatments after doctors said there was nothing more they could do. That’s when she came across targeted radiotherapy called CyberKnife.
The NHS said CyberKnife is ‘not clinically appropriate’ for her son’s cancer.
Mrs. Ilsley fundraised $121,110 (£100,000) for Charlie’s treatment in Turkey. After receiving treatment at Memorial Hospital in Ankara, which charged $36,385 (£30,000), he has reportedly been given the all-clear from the same doctors who said there was nothing they could do for him 18 months ago.
An MRI scan showed the boy’s tumors were shrinking but he is still required a stem cell transplant and two rounds of chemo.
After the procedure, an MRI scan showed ‘very positive’ and Charlie even managed to return to school.
The mother believes if she had listened to the doctors ‘Charlie wouldn’t be here now.’
“If I had listened to them Charlie wouldn’t be here now – it doesn’t bear thinking about,” Mrs. Ilsley said to BBC.
“When Charlie had his first scan in Turkey and the first treatment was working, I remember feeling really happy.
“And then [I felt] angry this couldn’t be done in my own country.”
