4-year-old Bleu Greenwood from Leicester was only four months old when he was diagnosed with the most severe form of cerebral palsy.

He was told that he would never walk but he finally has taken his first steps after his parents managed to save enough money for an operation.

Bleu struggled to keep his head up due to weak muscles, and he suffered uncontrollable jerks. His parents were also told that their child would be bounded to a wheelchair for the rest of his life as he was not eligible for NHS-funded surgery.

But they tried hard to save up until they had money for an operation to repair damaged nerves in Bleu’s spine.

The young boy was filmed walking into Wigston Menphys Nursery School and people were touched by the clip.

Blue has stage 5 cerebral palsy which prevented him from having NHS surgery due to its very low success rate.

His father, 28-year-old Dale Greenwood, and mother, 27-year-old Rielle Chapple, refused to accept the prognosis and researched private treatments on their own.

Fortunately, they managed to raise £10,000 for Bleu’s surgery to repair the nerves in his spine which were sending incorrect signals to his muscles.

“It was the most emotional moment of my life,” his mother said of his first steps. “It was so lovely and overwhelming to see because we never ever thought it would happen. It just shows how determined he is and we are so proud of him.

“We all had a massive celebration when he did walk for the first time. Everyone was crying because it was such a happy moment. And you could see how happy it made him.”

Bleu also surprised his teachers and friends by walking into the nursery with his walking frame.

“He has made so much progress since surgery and has improved massively,” his mother added.

“He has no pain now and is on a really good path moving forwards. We will try to get the best out of him, for his sake.”
