With his infectious smile and hands in the air, a 5-year-old boy prances around a hospital room on his new prosthetic leg as loud music played from a phone.
The Afghan boy, Ahmad Sayed Rahman, was only 8 months old when he was shot in the leg after he was caught in the crossfire between the Taliban and US-backed Afghan troops.
Ahmad has captured millions of hearts after a short video of him dancing on his prosthetic leg was shared on social media and gained a million views.
The boy and his parents, who are farmers, are from Logar province where fighting between the US-backed Afghan army and the Taliban occurs frequently.
Ahmad’s mother said he and Salima, his sister were caught in the battle and both children were badly injured. Salima suffered bullet wounds to her legs and kidney.
Ahmad got his first prosthetic leg when he was 1 year old. Because he is growing quickly, he needed anew leg every year. The latest prosthetic leg is already his fourth.
“He is always dancing and showing how happy he is to have an artificial leg,” his mom, Rayeesa, said to reporters.
“I’m so happy for him that he’s received this artificial leg and that now he can be independent,” she added.
Ahmad’s physiotherapist also said: “He’s a child and wants to play. He wants to have a leg so is adapting quickly. He doesn’t want to sit around inside.”
His video gained thousands of comments with some people offering help. One social media user said: “Extremely amazed by the paradox of happiness & grief in this video!”
Another wrote: “This is the smile of victory over all odds of life …god bless you dude.”
