A 12-year-old boy tragically passed away while playing a popular online video game for hours.
His devastated parents said they entered his room and found him unconscious, with the game still playing on his phone.
The child was taken to a hospital in Egypt but he passed away before he arrived, the Emergency Directorate of Health Affairs confirmed.
According to the Egypt Independent, the 12-year-old had been playing ‘PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ (PUBG) for hours without a break.
The boy’s death was labeled a ‘cardiac arrest’ caused by high blood pressure.
The Al-Alzhar Fatwa Center has issued a warning about the dangers of playing ‘violent’ and ‘addictive’ video games at a very young age.
According to Egypt Independent, the Center said games like PUBG ‘seem simple at first’ but they use ‘complex psychological methods’ to keep users playing.
The Al-Azhar Fatwa Center has also called on teachers, scholars and preachers to help raise awareness of the dangers of playing video games.
Parents are also urged to check in on their children more often and limit the time they spend on mobile devices.
This is not the first time someone has died from game addiction.
A 17-year-old from Thailand was found by his parents slumped against his computer after playing computer games without a break.
His heartbroken parents said they would bring food into his room and convince their son to stop but he continued gaming.
