A 5-year-old boy tragically died after drowning in a pool while he was on a holiday tour in Kos with his family.
Theo Treharne-Jones, from Cefn Coed, near Merthyr Tydfil, South Wales, is thought to have wandered from his hotel room to the pool area while his parents were asleep.
It’s being speculated that the boy jumped into the pool and no one was there to rescue him at the moment.
Theo’s family were staying at the Atlantica Holiday Village in Kos, Greece, in a group of 10. His parents Richard Jones and Nina Treharne, both 38, as well as his younger brother and older sister – all were sleeping when he went out of his room.
The family was living in a 3-bedroom house.
One of their neighbors said: “It is absolutely heartbreaking news. They are such a lovely family and the two boys are real sweeties.
“They are a really close family. Nina’s mum died recently and this is even more devastating for them. My thoughts and best wishes are with them.”
Another neighbor said: “It’s just absolutely tragic. I’m in shock. They’re such a lovely family and he was a lovely young boy.”
Theo’s body was found in the pool by a man who pulled him out while shouting for help, a guest at the hotel, who sought anonymity, told The Sun.
A woman rushed to the spot and performed CPR on Theo, but he had already died by that time.
Theo’s parents and a hotel manager were arrested following the incident.
The Greek police suspected them of man-slaughtering and endangering the life of a minor with neglect.
Helen Hulme, a family friend took to Facebook to defend Theo’s parents, writing: “Definitely not neglect I know the parents and I took the little boy to school he was adored by his parents and siblings and everyone who knew him.
“Just a gorgeous little boy who I will miss dearly along with many others.
“Thank you Adam for doing your best to save him R.I.P my little chunky monkey thinking of all the family at this heartbreaking time.”
Nina and Richard were eventually released but they will have to appear in a Greek court to answer to the charges.
A Greek police spokesman told the Sun: “It is common for next of kin to be arrested in such circumstances but as is always the case, they were not held in police custody and were immediately freed.”
The tour of the family was arranged by a tour operator, TUI.
A TUI spokesman said in a statement: “We are aware of the tragic incident at the Holiday Village Kos, Greece and our thoughts are with the family.
“Our team in resort is currently supporting the family and we will continue to assist in whatever way we can.
“The safety and well-being of our customers and staff is our primary concern and our dedicated resort team is working with the authorities and hoteliers.
“As the matter is currently still under investigation it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time.”
