16-Year-Old Boy Sentenced To Life In Prison After He Strangled His Sister Over Wi-Fi Password

16-year-old Kevon Watkins from Georgia was sentenced to life in prison after strangling his sister to death in a fight when he changed the Wi-Fi password.

The teen wanted to keep his family members from logging on so that it would not slow down the service while he played online games.

When his mother tried to reprimand him and it seemed like he would hit her, his 20-year-old sister Alexus stepped in.

But Kevon grabbed her by the neck and put her in a chokehold that lasted about 15 minutes. Only after the terrified mother called 911 and officers ordered him to let go did the teen do so.

“Get up off the floor,” her mother, Latoya Watkins, said, but she didn’t.

“I started screaming,” Latoya testified in Bibb County Superior Court, according to the Macon Telegraph. The officers tried to revive Alexus but she passed away of strangulation at the hospital hours later.

Kevon was sentenced by Bibb County Superior Court Judge Verda Colvin, according to Atlanta TV station WSB.

“I’m sorry,” the crying teen expressed as he was led from the courtroom.

Bibb County sheriff’s investigator Marcus Baker said: “He couldn’t really explain to me why he didn’t release her.”

When Baker told the teen his sister was gone, “He cried. I cried too,” Baker added. “It’s a sad situation.”

Latoya Watkins said that on the day of the incident, her 13-year-old son had complained that Kevon had changed the Wi-Fi password. She said that she unplugged the router and took it to her bedroom.

Then Kevon “came in my room and started grabbing something, it might have been a cord off the Internet box,” she said. “My daughter ran in there, she grabbed him … He acted like he was going to hit me.”

“I thought it was a normal brother-sister fight because they always fuss and fight like this,” Latoya added.

The 13-year-old son tried to push his older brother off Alexus but failed and the mother called 911.

“I never intended to kill her at all,” Kevon testified in tears. “She taught me most everything I know.”

District Attorney David Cooke said: “This act of violence resulted in an unspeakable tragedy for this family. I hope this verdict and sentence closes the door on this chapter of their lives and that they will be able to begin to heal.”
