During the race, the two boys, strangers and opponents, became friends.

Speaking about the moment before the race started, Darius, who goes to Mossy Creek Elementary School, said: “They called us down there to get in the lane and we had to get inside the lane.”

Next to him was Aaren, who attends Merriwether Elementary School.

The boys ran down the track toward the finish line when Aaren suddenly fell and broke his wrist. “I don’t think I got that far before I fell,” Aaren shared.

He wanted to break the fall by using his hands but it ended up breaking his wrist. Aaren then saw Darius running back toward his direction and thought his opponent had already won the competition.

“I already thought he won the race and was coming back to sit in the bleachers. But then I saw teachers like looking at him like, ‘Why’d you stop?’” Aaren said to WRDW-TV.

When Darius saw his opponent fell, he decided not to run to the goal and immediately turned around to check if Aaren was okay.

It was a selfless gesture of kindness and sportsmanship that left the people proud of him.

“He got hurt and he wasn’t going to be able to win the race and that wouldn’t be fair, so I just thought that I would just lose the race with him just to help him and see if he was okay,” Darius expressed.

“If you help someone, they could go on and help someone and they keep on going and help people, too,” he added.

Aaren told him: “You could’ve run the race, but instead of doing that, you had sportsmanship and came over and helped me.”
