A 10-year-old boy had a ‘black forest of fungus’ growing inside his ear because of using earphones for long periods of time, his doctors revealed.
There are many harmful effects of using headphones or earphones for extended periods. Aside from damaging your hearing if you listen to music too loudly or wear earpieces for so long, doctors also say that using earpieces for prolonged periods can result in vertigo, which is usually accompanied by nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.
Those who use wireless earphones have a risk of exposing themselves to radiation. Even though research about this side effect is still inconclusive, many studies say that radiofrequency radiation has biological effects that mirror carcinogens in rats.
Using earphones for extended periods can also lead to an ear infection. This is why doctors advise people not to share earpieces as it can easily transmit infection-causing bacteria.
That’s exactly what happened to a young boy from Beijing.
After checking the 10-year-old boy’s ears, doctors found a ‘black forest of fungus’ growing inside.
Dr. Wu Yuhua, ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist, shared pictures of what he discovered inside the child’s ear. He said that the fungus had started to grow as the 10-year-old had the habit of using earphones for extended periods of time.
The doctor said that the earpieces had trapped moisture inside the warm air, making the right environment for fungus to thrive. Spores were then transferred from the child’s hand to his ear as he enjoyed ‘picking his ear.’
Doctors and experts around the world have started to warn people about the possible dangers of using headphones and wireless earphones. They also advised users to keep their ears dry and limit the hours of usage.
Fortunately, the 10-year-old boy has since made a full recovery after he was given a course of antifungal medication.
