After his surgery last month, the young boy now has 21 teeth, according to CNN.

Dr. Prathiba Ramani, the head of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Saveetha Dental College and Hospital, told CNN that his team discovered the boy’s jaw sac was filled with ‘abnormal teeth.’

The sac was successfully removed by two surgeons before Ramani’s team underwent an examination process that confirmed the boy had hundreds of teeth inside his mouth.

Ramani told the outlet: “There were a total of 526 teeth ranging from 0.1 millimeters (.004 inches) to 15 millimeters (0.6 inches). Even the smallest piece had a crown, root and enamel coat indicating it was a tooth,” adding that the process took almost 5 hours to finish.

The child was first admitted to the Chennai hospital when he complained of pain and swelling near his lower right jaw.

Scans and x-rays were performed on his mouth, which helped determine that surgery would be required to remove hundreds of teeth as it was also difficult to know exactly how many were hidden.

One of the surgeons who performed the procedure, Dr. P. Senthilnathan, said to CNN that despite the severity of the condition, the surgery wasn’t as invasive as people would think.

“Under general anesthesia, we drilled into the jaw from the top,” Dr. Senthilnathan said. “We did not break the bone from the sides, meaning reconstruction surgery was not required.

“The sac was removed. You can think of it as a kind of balloon with small pieces inside.”

The boy was released from the hospital three days later, Ramani reported. It is believed the child was suffering from a rare condition called compound composite odontoma.
