A 9-year-old boy managed to beat cancer after surgeons removed his liver to cut cancerous cells out.
Saul Hayden from Rudheath, Cheshire was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant rhabdoid tumor (MRT) in his liver.
Only 5 of the 53 people around the world who have had the condition survived, according to the Northwich Guardian.
The young boy, who loves to play video games, started experiencing stomach pains and losing his appetite.
His mother rushed him to a hospital where a mass was found. A few days later, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital shared the devastating news.
“After multiple scans and invasive biopsies we discovered Saul had a stage 4 malignant rhabdoid tumour of the liver that had already spread to his arteries, up to the heart and metasised to his lungs,” his mother, Vicki, wrote.
“This is an incredibly rare and agressive type of cancer with a very poor prognosis and outlook. Saul has already undergone 13 rounds of powerful chemotherapy, 11 rounds of radiotherapy, stem cell harvests, he had multiple infections and even 4 adult teeth removed at Alder Hey.”
His cancer had shrunk after chemotherapy. Surgeons removed his liver and cut the cancer cells out before reinserting it back to his body.
“Without the surgery there was no chance for him,” Vicki expressed. “They were worried he wouldn’t make it at all. I was told one in ten adults don’t survive this type of operation so it was even riskier for him.
“The doctors are amazed at how well he has done but still won’t tell us what the outlook is. They don’t want to give is false hope.”
Saul underwent more chemotherapy and radiotherapy to kill any remaining cancer cells. And finally, he was given an all-clear!
“He has dealt with all of this with nothing but smiles and the will to fight,” his mother wrote. “Anything you can do to help keep him smiling and giving him the best quality of life goes a long way.”
One internet user commented: “Brilliant story!! Well done to all the doctor’s an nurse’s, amazing stuff.”
Another wrote: “Well done to you young man, well done to all involved.”
A third added: “Well done to the doctors and surgeons who made this happen. Hope the boy and his family can grow stronger from this.”
