A 15-year-old boy has quit school in order to focus on his gaming career and make a living out of playing video games.
Benjy Fish from Middlesex, London, is one of many teens looking to make a fortune by playing popular video games such as Fortnite that has allotted a prize pool of nearly $30 million for their World Cup competition.
As for Fish, he decided to drop out of school and get homeschooled in order to master the video game and participate in the World Cup in hopes of getting his hands on the massive reward.
So far, the 15-year-old has already earned over $30,000 and is expecting to double that amount over the next four months.
“When my mum suggested I quit school earlier this year to play computer games full-time, I couldn’t believe my ears. I’d always dreamed of being an eSports professional since I was about 13 years old,” the boy said in an interview with the Mirror.
Benjy, who claims to play the video game seven days per week, is running a YouTube channel with over 156,000 subscribers.
“My mum didn’t think I was all that good at it at first until I woke her up in the middle of the night to say I’d won £10,000 in an online competition against the top players in Europe,” the 15-year-old added.
“Now I can play until 4 am and get up at 2 pm in the afternoon. That way I can concentrate on gaming as a full-time career. Tutors visit me later in the day to fit in my GCSE work, which I’m going to split over three years instead of the usual two.”
As Benjy added, dropping out of school was “the best thing” that could happen to him.
“I don’t know what I’d buy myself but I’d love to buy a house for my mum and I,” the boy added, speaking of what he would do if he won a major prize in Fortnite World Cup.
“My dad passed away from cancer when I was only eight months old and we were made homeless and have been renting ever since. A place we could call our own would be brilliant.”
