13-year-old Rhys Williams has a life-limiting skin condition that causes him chronic pain.
After his mother shared his story, he received over 10,000 birthday cards from all over the world.
The schoolboy from the UK touched the hearts of people after his mom shared his experiences. Since birth, he has suffered from epidermolysis bullosa, a condition that triggers painful sores and skin blisters. It also causes his fingers to fuse together.
His internal tissue and skin can blister even from the slightest knock, leading to painful open wounds. To move around, he needs to use a wheelchair as his skin has fused at the back of his legs and he can’t keep them straight.
Rhys needs to wear bandages that must be changed three times daily to prevent infection. He also has to be fed through a tube because solid foods cause his throat to blister.
All the hardships he experiences daily became so much that he told his mother he had enough of life.
To cheer her daughter up, Tanya put out an appeal for birthday cards. But she didn’t expect that more than 10,000 cards and hundreds of message online would pour in after a few days.
Peter Moore, the chief executive of Liverpool Football Club, also called up to give Rhys free box tickets.
“He is loving it, he is so happy. It restores your faith in humanity,” Tanya said.
“I’ve had thousands of messages on Facebook, I try and answer each one. It’s fab.
“All the cards are just as nice and kind as the next. His favourite present so far has got to be his gaming headphones and Xbox game from someone in LA.
“He has just had a card from the Doctor Who production, he’s had cards from football clubs, supermarkets…”
She continued: “Rhys has not been able to wipe the smile off his face. He’s been so happy.
“Everything is in the living room at the moment. Twenty-one boxes were delivered on Saturday and I’ve only just been able to shut my front door.
“We have received about 7,000 cards just today (Saturday). We got three-and-a-half thousand on Friday. I can only just see my living room floor.
“He is opening each card and reading it, and he’s got his friend opening them too. He is taking his time with each one which is why it is taking so long.”
Tanya added: “It’s gone worldwide. He’s been on the telly in Chile. He got a card from Qatar today and loads from America. It’s just gone everywhere.
“I just want to say thank you. That’s all I can really say at the moment, I’m so overwhelmed by it all.”
