A brave 7-year-old boy left with severe burns after he risked his own life to save his two cousins during a boat explosion.
Bentley Mehringer from Duncan, Oklahoma went for a weekend outing with his family on April 24 in Kingsland, Texas.
The family went out on a lake in two separate boats.
One of the two boats suddenly exploded in front of the family while no one knew what exactly had happened.
Bentley’s mother, Breanna Sullivan told they all were left horrified and watched in horror from the other boat as they didn’t know what to do.
Sullivan told The Duncan Banner: “No one knew what happened so it was immediate panic and screaming in all directions around us.”
Bentley and his two cousins were at the bottom of the boat where the bunks were and his mother later found out that his little son helped the two girls go up first to save them from fire.
Bentley didn’t want his cousins to get hurt and he risked his own life to save them by sending them up first.
Sullivan said: “He thought he was on fire and could hear his uncle yelling from the top of the boat for them to get out. He said he sent the other two girls up before him because he didn’t want anyone else hurt.”
Bentley was left with severe burns after the accident but his two cousins escaped unhurt, thanks to the brave little boy.
When Bentley was asked about his heroic act, he told Texoma News Network: “I smelled … gas and then I went up to check and then there was a big explosion.”
He also said that he’s a superhero to which his mother replied: “Yes, you are a superhero.”
Bentley is currently recovering at a children’s hospital in Austin, Texas.
A fundraiser page has been set up to help his family pay for his medical bills
His mother said her little boy is a true hero for saving two lives while he didn’t even think of saving his own life first.
She said: “Bentley is a true hero in my eyes for being so brave and selfless at such a young age.”
