6-year-old Carlos Rolon was born with a rare condition called unbalanced atrioventricular canal defect that causes heart and lung problems.
Carlos had to undergo four heart surgeries within the first two years of his life and he was put on the heart transplant list in 2016.
Last year, his health deteriorated and he ended up in a hospital in August.
Finally, in April, Carlos’ parents were told that their son would be receiving a life-saving heart transplant after waiting for four years.
Carlos’ mother, Sheena Cossette said it was the best thing that they heard in years. She told CNN: “[His primary doctor] came up and told me he had [a transplant]. I think that was the biggest shock for me like, wow. It almost was so unreal.”
Carlos underwent life-saving surgery the next day and started getting better as soon as he returned from the operating room.
Cossette said his skin used to be bluish-gray but after surgery, his skin color looked normal and his breathing also improved.
Carlos is getting better and better every day and his parents are delighted their son is now able to live a normal life.
A family donated the life-saving organ to Carlos and saved his life.
Cossette thanked the family for donating the organ to her son and giving him a second chance at life.
Cossette said: “As I watched his chest rise, my heart got heavy. God bless the family who chose to donate this precious gift of life to my baby boy.”
“We will forever be grateful for the selfless act, for the family who saved our son’s life.”
Carlos is still staying in the hospital in isolation amid coronavirus crisis but soon, he will be able to go back home and live a normal life.
Cossette told the families or people who are going through the same to always have faith because miracles do happen and Carlos is proof.
