Brody Osga has a rare condition that makes him very sensitive to the sun.
Even just a short drive in a windowed vehicle can leave him covered in blisters.
Weighing only a little over 2lbs when he was born, Brody’s condition kept getting worse while doctors tried to determine why.
Doctors initially attributed his general sickliness to very premature birth but his health continued to get worse as he grew bigger and older. He also kept getting infections.
Eventually, Brody couldn’t eat.
After countless operations and visiting numerous specialists, the young boy was finally diagnosed with Chiari malformation III, a skull and brain defect that leaves him unable to eat and with chronic pain, aside from being trapped inside their house.
In this condition, the skull does not develop properly and is either too small or not the right shape for the brain, causing part of the brain to sit at the base called cerebellum. In Brody’s case, the cerebellum is being pressed hard into his spinal canal.
Brody has to wear a special backpack that feeds him and he lives in constant pain. It is unclear how his Chairi malformation causes sensitivity to the sun.
But on his 4th birthday, the community and the Make-A-Wish Foundation gave him a special surprise and made the impossible, possible.
They created a special tent where Brody could play, run and laugh with other kids.
Julia, Brody’s mother, said to InsideEdition: “I thought the best wish would be like something he couldn’t do like a regular child.
“We wanted a play area that he could play outside.”
The foundation found a company that makes specialized tents that block ultraviolet rays. Brody smiled from ear-to-ear when he finally walked out and played outside for the first time.
“I’m just really grateful for everybody helping me and helping Brody,” Julia said. “Being a single mom is hard, so I would never be able to do this on my own.”
