A 2-year-old boy survived a terror attack after his dad threw himself over and shielded him from bullets.
Zulfirman Syah was at the Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch in New Zealand with his youngster when white supremacist Brenton Tarrant started opening fire.
7 people died at the scene after Tarrant allegedly murdered more than 40 people at the nearby Al Noor Mosque.
Zulfirman didn’t think twice when he jumped over his son to shield him from a hail of bullets while others chased the culprit away.
After the attack, the boy was seen clambering over his dad as he lied on the floor. The child was hit in the buttock and leg by shrapnel but only suffered minor injuries. However, his father underwent emergency surgery.
Alta Marie, Zulfirman’s wife, told the New Zealand Herald: “My husband shielded our son during the attack at Linwood Islamic Centre, which caused him to receive most of the bullets and much more complex injuries than our son.
“He is recovering nicely and has been cheerful.”
Alta, an English teacher, also wrote on Facebook: “My husband Zulfirman Syah and son are both alive, but injured. Both shot in the attack today at the Linwood Islamic center in Christchurch, New Zealand (where we just moved 2 months ago).
“My husband, Jul, was shot in multiple places and has a drain in his lung (from what I have heard) though I haven’t seen him yet since he has been in surgery. I was recently united with my son, who has a gunshot wound to the leg and backside.
“He is traumatized but we are all alive. Thanks for your prayers and messages of concern.”
The family arrived in New Zealand from Indonesia only two months ago. Their friend said that the family “felt at peace in New Zealand… let’s help restore their peace and counteract this horrible act of violence.”
