Home Depot is facing a boycott from anti-Trump people after the company’s co-founder Bernie Marcus revealed his intention of donating millions of dollars to support Trump in his campaigns.
People who are rallying together with #BoycottHomeDepot are maintaining that purchase from the Home Depot is commensurable to directing a contribution to President Trump’s re-election bid.
“If you plan on buying a hammer, wood, or ANY home improvement items from Home Depot, you may as well send donations DIRECTLY to trump’s 2020 campaign. No more, @HomeDepot.#BoycottHomeDepot,” one person wrote on Twitter.
However, the facts, if seen rationally, differ a lot from what people are assuming.
Marcus retired from the Home Depot in 2002, about 15 years back from now, so his donations to Donald Trump has nothing to do with ‘sending your money directly to Trump’s 2020 campaigns.’
The 90-year-old who’s net assets are worth $5.9 billion told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution in an interview that he wants to dispense up to 90% of his wealth to charitable causes and organizations, and the rest of his fortune to political campaigns including the one regarding Trump’s re-election.
“He’s got a businessman’s common sense approach to most things,” Marcus said of Trump.
“Now, do I agree with every move that he makes? No, I don’t. But the truth is he has produced more than anybody else. He has. If we look at this country, I would say that we are better off today than we were eight years ago or six years ago.”
Highlighting Marcus’s work for others, Atlanta Journal-Constitution articulated that the billionaire is dedicated toward making the world a better place by donating almost all of his wealth to welfare organizations.
The record of Marcus Foundation shows that they gave away over $660 million in charitable disbursements over the last 15 years. Even though the amount is massive, it still does not include the funds Marcus and his wife donated elsewhere.
“What Bernie has done, and what he plans to do in his lifetime, will not only bring incredibly significant impact on those nonprofit institutions today, but will also continue to benefit those organizations for generations to come,” said Alicia Philip, the President of the Community Foundation for Greater Atlanta.
She added: “He is an inspiration to philanthropy in Atlanta.”
For Trump critics, the fact that Marcus is going to donate almost all his wealth is nullified by his planned contributions to Trump, as pointed by Business Insider.

“Marcus is also a major political donor: He supported, and intends to again support, Donald Trump’s presidential bid,” the outlet noted.
The same notion was displayed by a number of social media users.
“Home Depot shoppers if you’re anti Trump, boycott the store and cut up your cards! Founder Bernie Marcus plans to donate to President Donald Trump’s 2020 reelection bid.#boycotthomedepot,” one person tweeted.
“#HomeDepot founder Bernie Marcus was one of #Trump’s largest donors in 2016, giving $7 million to Trump’s campaign through outside groups. He plans to financially support the president in the 2020 election,” another wrote.
“Hey @hgtv this is another one of your sponsors & please just go with @Lowes instead of @HomeDepot from now on because you’re my self-care #BoycottHomeDepot #ImpeachTrump,” one furious opponent said.

The fact that Arthur Blank, Marcus’s former co-partner, is a primary donor to the Democratic presidential candidates, complicates ‘critic’s shopping calculations.’
In case of directing purchases to Lowe’s instead of the Home Depot, the matter is still questionable as Lowe’s too reportedly donates a lot to pro-business Republicans, as stated by Open Secrets.
