A pair of gay men who used to date each other as males have become girlfriends after simultaneously transitioning to females.
28-year-old Corey Kempster and Jari Jones from Brooklyn are female lovers who were born male. The pair met each other during college days but haven’t started the transition until two years ago.
Shortly after coming out not only as transgender but also as a gay couple, Corey and Jari have been determined to crush the standards and set a new stone in the fashion industry.
Due to their interesting story and unrivaled passion for fashion, the two have already modeled in countless campaigns for first-class brands and even appeared on the New York Times Magazine cover.
“For years, fashion has been one single look; tall, skinny, white. Now we have people like us, people who are there to break those standards,” Jari said in an interview with Barcroft TV.
“I want to continue to be the representation that we didn’t have.”
Speaking of their passion, Jari’s girlfriend, Corey, added:
“It’s empowering to be working in fashion. I get a chance to celebrate myself, my community, my partner and my body.”
As the couple went on to admit, they had both been struggling with gender identity issues when they were growing up.
“When I was a little kid I knew very well that I wanted to be a girl,” Corey said.
“I think late college, my dysphoria was at its peak. I didn’t know what it was yet but I had never felt worse about myself. There were days when I couldn’t get out of bed, I wasn’t going to class, I was really depressed and having suicidal ideas.”
Fortunately, the support they received from the LGBTQ community allowed the pair to accept who they really are and come out as a transgender lesbian couple.
“I think it was one of the greatest parts of discovering myself was having somebody like Corey,” Jari added.
