Kruger National Park is in the north-eastern parts of South Africa. This is one of the largest natural reserves in Africa and a place that is famous for the ‘Big Five’ which includes leopards, rhinos, lions, elephants, and even buffaloes.
In this park, there an incident happened that’s really jaw-dropping.
There was an adult hippo which was attacked by a fully grown lion. This is a rare thing to watch as lions don’t attack hippos because of their sharp teeth and the fact that even with their body structure hippos are swift and aggressive.
However, this mother hippo was stuck in the rive side mud, and the lion took this advantage. The lion, however, couldn’t take full advantage of the situation as the calf of the hippo was there to protect his mother from the predator.
The calf was also of the right size, and the lion didn’t see good chances of winning a head-on battle with him as well.
The calf came and fought with the lion a couple of times when the lion tried to go near the mother hippo who was dying slowly out of dehydration. The mother hippo was stuck in the mud which was by then drying up and becoming all the more difficult to escape.
The calf however kept by her side and the lion at bay. There was one time when the lion came close to the adult hippo, and the calf instantly charged him off the entire scenario.
The baby hippo was brave but alas it ended badly for them. The mother hippo died after a while due to dehydration, and a few days later the baby hippo died as well because of dehydration.
This was because the baby hippo was not mature enough to take care of himself yet.
