A 9-year-old girl punched a robber in the face after he attacked her mother and stole her purse.
Brave Journee Nelson is now being honored by Florida police for her bravery after she saved her mother from a thief by hitting the man in the face.
According to reports, Journee and her mother Danielle Mobley were outside Sabor Tropical Supermarket when they were attacked by a thief.
Without having second thoughts, the young girl rushed to her mother’s aid and punch the thief who tried to steal her purse.
Speaking to 7 News Miami, Journee said: “I fought back. I had to save my mom.”
Chief Frank Adderly said in a press conference that even though he would not recommend confronting thieves and other criminals, Journee’s brave actions were understandable during the moment.
“I bet he was shocked when she hit him right on the face,” said.
“You definitely could tell on the video tape he was not expecting that. Her actions were perfect timing in this particular situation,” the chief continued.
“I think she hit him pretty hard.”
Journee’s mother also told reporters that her daughter stepped in shortly after the thief attacked her.
“I’m very proud of her, that (helping) was her initial reaction,” she said. “I wish things could be a little different because she is still dealing with this mentally.”
Mobley also revealed that her daughter chased the thief down the block as he grabbed her purse.
“She actually jumped up and chased him four houses down the block with me chasing her, calling her back,” she said.
According to an arrest affidavit obtained by Yahoo, the purse contained bank cards, a phone, a Coach wallet, $40, and gum.
Two days after the incident, 29-year-old Demetrius Jackson has been arrested and charged with robbery and battery.
