The CEO of a brewing firm was forced to quit his job after he jokingly called non-alcoholic beer to be ‘gay lemonade.
’
Nick Warming resigned from Southern Bay Brewery following the backlash he received on a social media meme he shared on brewery’s Facebook page.
In the image Nick posted, an old boxer was seen exclaiming: “Non-alcoholic beer. You mean gay lemonade?”
As soon as the joke was posted, most of the 2,000 followers of Southern Bay Brewery got angry and started making complaints.
After the outrage on social media, Nick apologized, saying he didn’t intend to offend any group of people.
The former boss of the Australian firm said: “Apologies to all for an earlier post. This was posted without any thought whatsoever and no offense was intended.
“I apologize unreservedly. The post has since been deleted and we will be more careful selecting our posts in future.
“We realize this is not good enough and we should not have posted the homophobic beer meme. It will not happen again.
“It was a gross error and mistake and we would appreciate it if people were kind enough to forgive us.
“The post in no way reflected the thoughts of staff of the Southern Bay Brewing Co. and they should not be held accountable for my actions. Please accept my sincere apologies.”
However, his apology wasn’t accepted by many people who called it a sheer ‘disgrace.’
A critic wrote: “Can you please update and correct your apology, it wasn’t a problem because it was a ‘beer meme.’ It was homophobic. Let’s be really clear.
“Don’t minimize your actions, but own up to it or your response is meaningless.”
A second person said: “The post and the subsequent ‘apology’ has just proven that you haven’t learnt as a company from previous poor posts.”
Another added: “Not remotely acceptable!!! its 2019!!! This is a brilliant industry with amazing and diverse people in it and supporting it.
“What an absolute disgrace. You have tarnished its reputation and yet again we are reminded that this bullshit still exists.”
The backlash forced Nick to resign from his job.
“I thought I would advise that following a board meeting, I have resigned as CEO of Southern Bay Brewing Co. The board have accepted my resignation with immediate effect,” he said in a statement.
It isn’t the first time Southern Bay Brewery has received public criticism.
Earlier this year, the brewery got into trouble with the Alcohol Beverages Advertising Code Scheme (ABAC) over another social media joke, according to Brew News.
The meme, which said “there’s nothing wrong with you that me drinking six beers can’t fix,” was deemed unsuitable by ABAC who claimed it promoted binge drinking.
