When a bride collapsed and died at her own wedding, her sister tied the knot with the groom at the same ceremony as the families wanted to continue with the festivities.
According to reports, the bride identified as Surbhi suffered a heart attack during the ceremony in Uttar Pradesh, India, after exchanging garlands with the groom named Manjesh Kumar.
A doctor rushed to the scene but failed to save Surbhi.
But instead of calling off the ceremony, families of both parties decided to go on with the festivities by replacing Surbhi with her sister, Nisha.
The first bride’s body was placed in a separate room while the ceremony continued. She was cremated after the festivities.
One of Surbhi’s grieving uncles, Ajab Singh, told Mail Online that it was a ‘tough call’ for the bride’s family to continue with the wedding.
“It was a tough call for our family. One daughter lay dead in one room and the wedding of another daughter was being solemnized in the other room,” he said.
“We have never witnessed such mixed emotions. The grief over her death and the happiness of the wedding has yet to sink in,” Singh added.
Surbhi’s heartbroken brother Saurabh also said: “It’s hard to believe a dead body was in the other room — and a bride was being prepared in next one.”
He told news agency IANS: “We did not know what to do I the situation. Both the families sat together and someone suggested that my younger sister Nisha should be married to the groom. The families discussed the matter and both agreed.”
Saurabh’s grieving mother, Guddi Devi, is now being taken care of by her son Gaurav.
“Mummy is in a lot of pain. She calls for her day in and day out as she was the eldest daughter. She had dreamed of doing wonders in her life. May she rest in peace,” Gaurav told Mail Online.
