A young bride-to-be was left stunned after her thick hair started falling out without a warning just before her wedding.
24-year-old Sophie Hitchen from Suffolk, England, woke up one April morning only to find a handful of hair in her hands.
The hair loss continued into May, whereas Sophie lost around 90 percent of her hair by the end of the month. Soon enough, she also noticed she started losing the rest of her body hair including eyebrows.
Shocked by the sudden change, the young lady sought advice both from a dermatologist and a trichologist who were allegedly “clueless” about her condition.
“Everyone who I have spoken to medically has asked if I have gone through any significant trauma or stress in my life. But I haven’t – not to the extent that it would have caused this. There was no trigger for it,” Sophie said.
After losing the majority of her hair, the 24-year-old decided to shave the remaining strands to take control of her condition.
As the girl added, she has now gained the courage to speak up about her condition and offer support to other people experiencing hair loss.
“I found that a lot of girls on social media have helped me get through this over the last couple of months,” Sophie says.
“I wanted to be that girl for other people. I don’t want anyone to feel like they’re going through this alone.”
Convinced that what she’s suffering from is alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that causes hair loss, the 24-year-old now aims to raise awareness around the condition and help as many people as possible.
“Nobody knows enough about alopecia or what really causes it. I just want to raise as much awareness as possible,” she added.
