A young bride has gone viral after proudly donning a $50 wedding dress that she bought from a charity store.
While most brides aren’t willing to cut down on expenses when it comes to their weddings, 29-year-old Cat Wilkinson proved that one doesn’t have to resort to expensive garments to feel special.
As the young lecturer of Liverpool John Moores University revealed, she married her boyfriend Mike after dating him for five years.
Rather than spending thousands on a white gown, however, Wilkinson got her wedding dress from a charity store in York, UK. After a few alterations, the budget $50 dress fit her perfectly and the bride couldn’t feel any more special in it than she did.
“Since our wedding, I’ve received lots of lovely compliments about my wedding dress, with people messaging asking where is was from, so I thought I would share the story,” Cat shared on Facebook after her wedding.
“On the day that Mike proposed to me, he took me for a night in York. The next day I was looking in the charity shops (as I often do) and saw the dress on one of the rails.
“It was a charity shop on two floors and I was upstairs and phoned Mike to tell him not to come up while I tried something on and to ask if the shop volunteer could come up to take a photo.
“I bought the dress there and then for the small sum of £35. I had a few alterations made to it to make it just how I wanted, including adding buttons (instead of a zip) to the back of the dress and buttons on the sleeves, and moving the placement of some flowers on the front of the dress.”
As the 29-year-old added, the story behind her wedding dress only got better from then on.
“I took the dress to a vintage bridal store as I was curious and found out that the dress is 1950s, made from home rather than a bridal store, and the flower embellishments are older still – meaning they were likely passed down from an older relative as a ‘something old’ keepsake,” she added according to Daily Mail.
“I hope my £35 wedding dress is a small reminder that something doesn’t need to cost the earth to make you feel special.”
