This ‘Crooked House’ Pub Is As Drunk As The Customers

In Britain, the Crooked House pub has gained a reputation as the country’s drunkest and not necessarily because of the booze it serves.

The precariously leaning establishment looks like it’s about to fall over but its natural leaning has produced several illusions that have made it a tourist attraction.

For instance, one can seemingly roll marbles UPHILL.

The pub, located in Dudley, West Mids, started life as a farmhouse in 1765. It was converted into a pub in the 1830’s and the fact that one side of the building was four feet lower than the other soon attracted scores of visitors who wanted to see the curiosity for themselves.

Becks Donnelly-McHale, the front house manager of the ‘Crooked House’, said: “The pub is mostly famous for the illusion of marbles rolling uphill and a lot of customers come to visit the crooked house, just because they’ve heard of the marble trick.

“This is caused by the level of the floor and the angles that been formed due to the subsidence of the building.

“We have regular checks to make sure there’s no further movement and damage.

“Lots of people will come because they heard from family or friends who visited before or read about it online.”

“They love the quirkiness, especially if they haven’t been before. They love the fact that obviously it is crooked, most of them do believe when they get here it will be just an illusion.

“They appreciate the fact that we’ve kept it as it was, with its original features.

“The illusion brings a lot of additional trade here at The Crooked House. A lot of people come asking about it, especially kids who are particularly curious about it.
