Britney Spears has spoken out about her conservatorship and revealed she no longer wants her father, Jamie, to be in control of her estate and finances.
According to TMZ, the paperwork filed by the 38-year-old’s court-appointed lawyer states that the ‘Hold It Against Me’ hitmaker not only “strongly opposed” to the role of her conservator being in the hands of her father but also wishes for her temporary conservator, Jodi Montgomery, to keep the role permanently.
“Britney is strongly opposed to James continuing as a sole conservator of her estate.point 250 |
Rather, without in any way waiving her right to seek termination of this conservatorship in the future, she strongly prefers to have a qualified corporate fiduciary appointed to serve in this role,” the legal documents filed by Britney’s lawyer, Samuel Ingham, read according to The Blast.point 248 | 1
Montgomery was assigned the role of Britney’s temporary conservator back in 2008 after the singer’s father, Jamie, had a public meltdown.
In 2019, following further health complications, and physical conflict between him and Britney’s then-13-year-old son, the father stepped down from his position as the lead of Britney’s conservatorship.
To make sure her father doesn’t take control of her estate and finances again, Britney wants Montgomery to be assigned as her permanent conservator.
“We are now at a point where the conservatorship must be changed substantially in order to reflect the major changes in her current lifestyle and her stated wishes,” the ‘Circus’ hitmaker’s lawyer said.
As Ingham added, a legal showdown is an option, as he believes that his client’s father will react “aggressively” to the changes requested by Britney.
“Britney herself has expressed to me a desire that we associate an attorney or law firm with substantial expertise in handling contested litigation in a highly complex case such as this one through trial,” the lawyer added.
