Antarctica, the land of ice has let loose an iceberg of the size of Sydney.
Yes, it is humungous, the Australian Antarctic Division reported.
A huge iceberg has just broken out and is floating in the ocean. The size of the iceberg is 1,636-square-kilometres, almost the size of Sydney.
Yes, it is massive but the scientists say there is nothing to be worried about. The scientists had been watching the part of the iceberg since 2000 when it started to get detached.
It had a few cracks back then and now it is finally broken away.
They have confirmed that the iceberg that is now floating independently on the sea is a part of the continent’s east self called- Amery ice shelf. No such major calving event has happened in a very long time since the 1960s.
Helen Amanda Fricker, a professor at Institution of Oceanography of Antarctic Studies and Scripps said in her statement “I am so excited to see this happening. We had known for a long time that this is going to happen and I am excited to see it.
If you think this is the outcome of climate change then no it is not. This is a natural process that happens for the icebergs in every 60 to 70 years and it happened.”
This breaking may give you another matter to worry about, the rise in the level of water. On this Dr, Ben Galton-Fenzi assured that nothing is going to happen as the iceberg was already floating in the ocean and is still occupying the same place.
While the experts say the iceberg breaking is not due to the change in climate, there are going to be more such calving events in the near future that may or may not result in the raised level of the sea.
