People have probably seen a lot of Soviet monuments around if they lived around the Eastern block of Europe.
Soldiers, holding their guns with proud for a head-on fight, comrades standing in all their grand and muscular position, huge heads of Lenin.
The older generation is sentimental about these memories of the glorious Soviet army, but for the young ones, these monuments are just synonymous with the good ole Soviet brain-washing.
A huge monument for the Soviet Army was built in 1954. But, later the monument becomes a victim of vandalism over and over again. The city officials clean it only to be painted again.
The monuments painted by a group of anonymous artists who call themselves Destructive Creation. The military figures were turned into subjects like Superman, Ronald McDonald, Santa Claus, and Wonder Woman. A slogan which means in English is “In pace with time” was scribbled beneath them.
In 2012, three members of the Russian feminist protest punk rock band Pussy Riot were arrested and convicted by a Russian court and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment each.
This was highly criticized outside Russia and on the same day, colorful knit balaclavas (trademark of Pussy Riot members) were kept on the heads of figures of the monument.
The pink color refers to the painting of The Monument to Soviet Tank Crews in Prague by David Černý in 1991, and the slogan under the figures says “Bulgaria apologizes.”
The monument was repainted in February 2014, to honor Ukraine that was a victim of Russia’s aggression. One of the soldiers and the flag was painted in the national colors of Ukraine and the phrase “Glory to Ukraine” was written in Ukrainian on the monument. The vandalism was an act of support of the 2014 Ukrainian Revolution.
