Black ice, commonly also known as clear ice and transparent ice, refers to a thin coating of ice that covers hard surfaces such as roads and pavements.
This slippery coating is very dangerous and should be avoided at all times as it can easily cause the vehicles to slip off the road. One bus driver from Alabama knows that better than anyone.
Bus driver Wayne Price was in charge of picking up 40 to 50 students and taking them to school on a frigid winter morning. On the way to their school, however, the bus driver noticed that to the road was covered in black ice and that the coating was only getting thicker the further they got.
While the Shelby County had already notified the school and parents that classes would be delayed due to road dangers, Price didn’t get the message in time and the kids had already been on his bus.
Rather than progress and risk slipping off the road, Wayne knew that keeping the students safe was his top priority. Since he also didn’t want to return them home and increase the chances of an accident, this bus driver came up with an excellent idea to pass time.
After parking the bus at the side of the road and letting the kids use their gadgets for two hours, Price decided to keep them occupied and compensate for the meal they missed at the school by taking them to a local McDonald’s and treating all 40 – 50 of them a warm meal that he paid for from his own pocket.
After hearing of his charitable act, the Montevallo Elementary School officials released the following statement:
“Mr. Price, one of our bus drivers, truly demonstrates the spirit of Christmas! On Tuesday, when school was delayed due to icy roads and we weren’t able to serve breakfast, he purchased biscuits from McDonald’s for his entire bus of students! What a kind act that our students will forever remember!”
