Facing the truth is one of the most difficult things in life especially if that truth involves bad news or an uncomfortable subject. That’s why most people are satisfied with all those little white lies to shield them from any awkward encounters or conversations from the people closest to them.
Of course, what this does is allow the bad news to fester until the person you need to talk to about it finds out from someone else or you make a slip and are thrust into an emotional confrontation that you’re just not prepared for. And then there will really be hell to pay.
But even knowing that fact, it doesn’t take away the reality that no one likes breaking the bad news to people. And one construction worker and comedian realized that he definitely had a market and so has opened up a business that specializes in breaking the bad news to people. He obviously believes in the saying that one shouldn’t kill the messenger or something like that because business seems to be taking off.
Jonathan Chalk, 29, has a reputation for being blunt yet he also has a sense of humor. So he decided to put those qualities to good use by opening up his one-man operation where he fields requests to inform people of some uncomfortable truths.
He doesn’t peg a price for his services but will happily accept any donations.
Jonathan said: “I have always been blunt, and the idea of doing this came to me when I was pitching comedy bits with my friends.
“So, I started my Facebook page Jon Breaks Bad News, which reached 30,000 likes in the space of a week.”
While a few of those requests are friends pranking each other, the real deal can get dramatic in no time.
He said: “Some of the most epic calls were a guy who asked me to call his ex-wife and tell her he would no longer pay for childcare.
“When I got in touch with her, she then asked me to call him back to tell him that the child was not his anyway.
“Another time a kid asked me to call his stepdad to tell him he didn’t like him.
“The stepdad took it so badly that he wanted to fly me out to the UK to fight him.
“Some of the calls are hilarious, while the most serious ones I sometimes refrain from posting.”
Aside from donations, people also support Jonathan through Patreon and he also sells t-shirts to help fund his business.
