A gingerbread man biscuit is one of our favorite staples before Christmas and the traditional treat dates back to the 15th century.
But one café in Auckland, New Zealand sparked a long debate after it removed Gingerbread men from its menu and changed it to ‘GingerBread Gender Neutral person’ before Christmas.
The Tannery café changed the name from its menu ‘to be more inclusive.’
The jar of gingerbread man biscuits on the counter caused a stir, with customers taking pictures and posting them on social media.
In an interview with Stuff, owner Andre Cettina said that they changed the name after many customers asked why they had been called ‘gingerbread man’ in the first place.
Cettina explained: “It started off a bit tongue-in-cheek, but it’s actually become a focal point and started a bit of a discussion at the counter with a lot of people taking photos.”
She added: “We’ve had a lot of people commenting saying ‘stop being so pedantic, it’s just a biscuit’. I had to reply to them going, ‘did you miss the whole point?’
“It used to be that 90 per cent of the time we sold [the gingerbread biscuits], it was to kids. There’s a lot more people buying them now, which is quite funny.”
But some customers were upset after the café removed the original name from the menu.
One internet user wrote: “PC gone mad, always been ginger bread man, why change now. It’s a biscuit, not a living creature. I find this all so sad.”
Another said: “Boycott them just for their gross stupidity.”
A third added: “This ridiculous, PC gone mad, what’s next, the world’s gone bonkers.”
Someone else commented: “Stop please stop! This gender neutral craze is getting out of control the world over. Enough already.”
