If you’re not from Britain or any of its former colonies, you may be wondering what “high tea” exactly means.
Simply put, it’s a meal eaten in the late afternoon or early evening. In fact, it was considered the evening meal or supper of a working-class family, typically taken between 5 to 7 pm which is usually when working-class people came home.
It’s totally different from “afternoon tea” which is usually taken at 4 pm but is not supposed to replace dinner but rather tide you over until dinnertime.
Of course, times change and nowadays, high tea is usually served with scones, macaroons, and cut sandwiches as you sip tea from fine china. But one eatery in Canberra is bringing back the traditional meaning of high tea with their offering of “burger high tea.”
Beef & Barley prides itself on its specialty burger creations and this latest one puts a twist on high tea by offering burgers, popcorn chicken, and chunky fries. While it comes in at a hefty $40 per person, this also comes with a complimentary glass of champagne or beer. So eating with friends and calling it a “tea” party would really be a stretch, but whatever. As long as the food is good.
The package also includes halloumi bites and pulled pork sliders. And if you’re vegan, no worries. In its website, Beef & Barley mentions that they are willing to adjust their meals depending on one’s dietary requirements.
And the eatery hasn’t forgotten about people with a sweet tooth, either. They also offer a platter of tasty treats and also include brownies and lamingtons.
If you’re keen on starting happy hour early, then Beef & Barley also offers the option to upgrade one’s complimentary champagne or beer into bottomless ones for an additional $20 per person. But it comes with a catch because the unlimited portion only lasts one-and-a-half hours.
Customers who managed to sample the eatery’s new offering have enjoyed it and spread the word through social media.
A lot have even tagged friends on Instagram and one even said “I can’t even deal. It’s a must.”
And even better, you don’t need to wait until 5 pm because the meal is served to start from 11:30 am although bookings are preferred.
