Beth Pendergrass, from Rio Rancho, New Mexico, is battling breast cancer after being diagnosed with HER2-positive Breast Cancer, Stage 2B in 2018.
The 39-year-old woman now dresses up as her favourite characters from movies and television like David Bowie and Marge Simpson.
Instead of letting her hair to fall out slowly, Beth cut her hair herself after being diagnosed with the disease.
She said: “After cutting my hair, a friend told me I looked like Fräulein Maria from Sound of Music. So as a joke, I took a picture of myself, placed it next to a picture of Maria and sent it to my friend.”
“That’s when it hit me. My pictures keep me focused on the positive.”
She says her pictures help her to cope with the stress and emotions that come with a cancer diagnosis.
Beth said: “I have since had surgery to remove the tumor and 13 lymph nodes and am going through additional chemo as a preventative measure as I am a high risk for recurrence.”
“I will finish chemo this summer and will begin radiation following that.”
To fight cancer, she now dresses up as some of her favorite characters from Eleven from Stranger Things, to Spaceman David Bowie, to Harley Quinn, and Marge Simpson.
She shares her pictures to her Instagram account (@instabeth505) where she has a huge following.
Beth said: “The pictures and words I write are reminders to me. I will be able to look back on them and remember that I am a strong person— I am a survivor and a fighter.”
“Through research, I had learnt that a number of individuals impacted by cancer recommended keeping a journal. I knew I didn’t want to keep just any journal.”
“I wanted a clever way to document my journey—to take a challenging experience and turn it into something positive and this was it”, she added.
Beth is inspiring thousands of people and encouraging cancer patients to find the good even in their toughest times.
