Cancer is a devastating illness, not just physically but mentally and emotionally as well.
The patient not only has to deal with battling a disease that may eventually end up ravaging his/her body but at the same time come face-to-face with the fact that they can’t even perform some of the most basic tasks because oftentimes, the treatment itself is quite grueling.
And this doesn’t include both the financial and emotional cost to the patient and their loved ones. This is why one charity group called Cleaning For A Reason offers FREE house cleaning services for women who are struggling with any form of cancer.

It may not seem like much but think about it. Women have traditionally been the queens of the house who make sure that everything is in order, meaning the meals are cooked on time, the trash is taken out as scheduled (it’s the dad who may physically take the trash out but we know who reminds him what to do), and that the house is clean.
But as one cancer survivor said, one thing that cancer patients don’t have is energy. And that means women with cancer can’t clean the house themselves. But it gets even worse because cancer treatment is very expensive so more likely than not, the patient can’t afford house cleaning services either.
This is why Debbie Sardone, a businesswoman who owns several cleaning services, founded Cleaning For A Reason in 2006. The idea for the nonprofit came when a prospective client called Debbie asking about their rates for their cleaning services.
When Debbie quoted a price, the caller said, “I won’t be able to afford that now; I’m undergoing cancer treatment” and abruptly hung up. That stunned Debbie who sat back and wondered why she never previously thought of offering free cleaning services for women battling cancer.
It may seem like such a simple thing but one cancer survivor named Stacey Schwinghammer found relief in the thought that she could focus whatever energy she had on her family instead of on cleaning. “It gave me a sense of peace knowing that the one thing I didn’t have to worry about was my home,” she said. “It changed my world.”
Cleaning For A Reason now has over 1,200 maids who volunteer their time and effort and has helped more than 30,000 women. Cleaning technician Kathy Steinkopf says that they’re not so much cleaning technicians as friends who are helping out someone in need.
The organization gives these women hope because they know someone is out there rooting for them. One beneficiary even wrote Debbie saying that when her house was cleaned, for the first time since her diagnosis, she felt that she could beat her cancer.
“Women may be down in their health, but what we do lifts them right back up!” says Steinkopf.
