A killer whale has lost almost all of his teeth after gnawing at his enclosure, breaking the hearts of thousands of people around the world.
One Voice, an animal rights organization, shared heartbreaking photos of the killer whale in his enclosure at the Marineland Antibes.
The organization said they were scheduled to have a meeting with French authorities to talk about banning the captive breeding and trade of marine animals. However, the meeting was postponed to ‘a future date.’
“he only killer whales in France are at the Marineland Park in Antibes. Inouk is special because he has eaten away the walls of the pool to the pool liner gel. He is in constant pain,” One Voice explained.
“The main thing that we denounce is him not being able to live as he should, and the physical consequences of his mental suffering.”
The organization demands that the government ban breeding programs in enclosures as newborn whales and dolphins die right away after birth.
One Voice also want a ban on the trade of marine animals.
The founding president of the organization, Muriel Arnal, said: “These animals are highly intelligent and need to be in the ocean. A pool can never replace their natural habitat.
“In the wild they would swim a hundred miles a day. Here, muscles are weak and they are bored.”
Arnal added: “They are constantly being medicated, they fight amongst each other, but in the ocean they would be able to flee.”
She also said that “mothers are separated from their young ones” and this significantly affects their mental health.
Killer whales are more intelligent than apes such as chimpanzees, bonobos or gorillas. These animals have a language that evolves according to their environment, Arnal explained.
She also said that killer whales should be in sanctuaries that would let them swim long distances ‘in a straight line instead of going around in circles.’
