Her Christmas tree reflects just how much they love the holidays because it’s practically bursting with the holiday spirit but the space where the gifts are supposed to go is a bit bare. This is because the gifts were stolen along with Brenda’s 1998 Acura Integra where the gifts were stored. Last week, the car was broken into as it was parked in front of her home located in Batista Street in Linda Vista.
“Really angry and crying a lot,” said Brenda.
But the theft hurts not just because of the gifts that were stolen along with it. The vehicle is Brenda’s only method of getting to work and for dropping off her kids, ages 8, 10, and 12, at school. And when she realized all the gifts that were left in the car’s trunk, her heart sank even more.
“Felt like something heavy fell on me,” said Brenda.
The trunk held some $400 worth of gifts that she was hiding from her children.
“I was really upset. I couldn’t believe someone would do that. It’s Christmas!” said Brenda.
The car was found a few days later in El Cajon, minus the steering wheel. Brenda doesn’t have theft insurance and she can’t afford the $500 fee that’s needed to reclaim it from the tow yard.
When her kids found out about the theft, they drastically reduced their wish lists.
“One said, ‘It’s okay, Mom. We’ll figure it out.’ I’ve always taught them it’s more about giving than receiving … There was a lot of pride. Emotional and happy,” Brenda said.
Luckily, her friends are helping out and giving her rides while she tries to save up for another car. A GoFundMe account has also been set up for the family.
