Joanna Hole, from Bath, was walking her 11-year-old Patterdale terrier, Jenny when her lead got caught in a car bumper.

Jenny was dragged more than 300m down the road while horrified Joanna looked on. Joanna said all she could see was Jenny trying to stand up.

She said: “We were crossing a road junction when Jenny’s lead – one of those big, clunky extendable ones –somehow got caught on the tow-bar of a car that was just pulling out”.

“The lead was wrenched from my hand and the handle got tangled in the tow-bar. I watched in horror as little Jenny was dragged away from me. All I could see was her trying to stand up. It was awful – she was going from side-to-side like a water-skier. I was terrified she’d swing into the stream of rush hour traffic.”

Joanna couldn’t run after the car as she has a knee problem. Luckily, a cyclist, who was passing by, alerted the driver of the car.

The driver stopped the car and Joanna rushed to Jenny.

She said: “I was wailing at the top of my lungs. There were some teenagers at a bus stop nearby, and they got to her first and got her off the road.”

“They were amazingly kind and brave – she was covered in blood and in a mess but they were trying to soothe her. The driver was even more upset than me, trembling and very tearful. He told me he was a dog owner too and felt just dreadful.”

A kind woman drove them to the vet. She said: “Her paw pads had rubbed off all the way to the tendons. Somehow, she’d managed to stay standing up – the vets said that if she’d fallen over onto her head or side, she wouldn’t have stood a chance of survival.”

The vets operated on Jenny straight away and kept her in for three days. Within a few weeks, she was able to move around but couldn’t walk properly for six weeks.

Joanna says she is glad Jenny got another chance at life as she had a rough past already.

She was rescued from a puppy farm where she was burned, kicked and bashed. Then Joanna and her husband adopted Jenny.

This is not the first time Jenny experienced such accident. She was once chasing a cat and got hit by a car.

A couple of years ago, Jenny got tangled in the tree roots. They had to bring their  picnic chairs and had to wait for her to come out
She said: “Put it this way: she’s not a stranger to danger!”

Jenny is now healthy and living happily with her owners.
