The UK has been proposed with a new law that says illegal occupancy of land can lead to jail time.
This means that the travelers who live and travel in their caravans cannot keep it stationary without permission for longer and turn it into a home place as it can lead to an arrest and seizing of their caravans on the charge of occupying land illegally.
Under the present legal law, trespassing is considered a civil matter. This means that if someone wants to remove people occupying their land will have to go through a hazardous case in court that will cost a fortune.
Working on the same, Home Secretary Priti Patel has proposed new law.
As per this new law, the police will have greater power in comparison to the present through which police will have the right to arrest the owner of the caravan and even seize the vehicle if they try to occupy and set a camp on any public or private land without permission.
On the law, the Home Secretary said that “Police will have the right to take an immediate power to arrest to save the landowner from any mental harassment.”
“We live in a community and we all want our community to be a safe place to live in. Trespassers should not be entertained in any circumstance.
Our proposal works on the same and ensures immediate removal of the trespassers.”
Patel said that she is copying the system followed in countries such as the Republic of Ireland where unauthorized encampment is treated as a legal offense and thus leads to instant arrest.
The police will first encourage moving the vehicles and will guide them to the legal places where they can park and set their camp and if they are not following the orders then the police can take the required action on their own.
