A 61-year-old carer caught stealing cash from a dementia patient’s home on a hidden camera hidden inside an alarm clock.
Graziella Avetti can be seen stealing £130 from a purse, bed and bedside cabinet and stuffing cash into her bra in Normanton-on-the-Wolds, Nottinghamshire.
Avetti was caring for the homeowner’s mother who has dementia and is in her 90s. She was staying overnight to care for the dementia patient.
When the family returned the next day, they checked the camera. After she was caught stealing on a hidden camera, the family reported her to the police and she was arrested.
Ten items of jewelry worth a total of £20,000 are also missing from their home in Normanton-on-the-Wolds, Nottinghamshire.
Avetti stayed overnight at the house on several occasions and the family trusted her. When the family came the next day, she was calmly drinking coffee like she did nothing.
But, when the family saw the footage captured on the hidden camera, they were left shocked. They decided to report her to the police.
She was sentenced to a 12-month community order, 160 hours of unpaid work and ordered to pay £750 prosecution costs and an £85 victim surcharge.
Police Investigation Officer Russell Oliver said: “Avetti was trusted to care for an elderly woman and had stayed overnight at the house on a number of occasions.”
“But the family was horrified to find crystal clear video footage showing she had stolen cash when only the elderly mother was at home with her – and she clearly thought no-one would be looking.”
“After the daughter of the woman she was caring for came home the next morning she was calmly drinking coffee in the kitchen and exchanged pleasantries.”
“Thankfully the family’s hidden camera caught her red-handed and she has now had to face up to what she had done.”
