A few years ago, Nicole Bohm adopted two cats after they were rescued from a farm.
The kittens could be twins as they both have the same black and white fur.
But after several months, one of them, Elli, started to show changes.
Bohm said she developed an unexplained white spot on the back. She was wondering what could’ve caused it, so she brought Elli to a vet.
“She had a tuxedo coat like her sister. Nothing unusual,” she told The Dodo. “The changing began about one year birth.”
The vet found out Elli has a condition that is rare both in humans and cats. It is called vitiligo.
Vitiligo occurs when the cells producing melanin stop functioning or die, according to the Mayo Clinic. The condition is not contagious or life-threatening. In humans, it causes the skin to whiten in patches.
Although it affects people of all skin types, it may be more noticeable in people with a darker complexion.
In Elli’s case, her fur becomes white. Her fur changed as the weeks went on.
“I was surprised. I’m still surprised,” Bohm told The Dodo.
The areas that will become white showed up as a lighter gray after a few months, while the black marking around her eyes remained black.
Bohm said it is not clear whether those markings around Elli’s eyes will stay that way or they are just more stubborn than the rest of the fur.
Her fur continues to become white and time will tell what her final appearance is. Bohm said: “Her personality is the same as ever.
“It doesn’t matter to her. She is as cute and lovely and as playful as the first day.”
One Facebook user said: “She is gorgeous and healthy, her sister is too.”
Another wrote: “Beautiful cat before and after the change.”
