A two-year-old cat named Dexter was adopted by Ruth and John Lewis of Redruth, Cornwall when he was eight months old.
In July, Dexter dragged himself home after he was shot by someone through the mouth.
This left his jaw fractured and he was left fighting for his life.
But, the cat survived the attack and received the title of Pet Survivor of the Year by veterinary charity, PDSA.
A public poll was held by the PDSA for pets who survived a horrific illness or injury. A judging panel selected the four finalists and a public poll declared Dexter the winner.
He was named Pet Survivor of the Year and the charity praised the brave cat, his owners, the vets, and the nurses for treating the cat.
His owner Ruth said Dexter dragged himself home after he was shot and they rushed him to the vets.
X-rays showed he had been deliberately shot with an airgun through the mouth that left his jaw fractured.
The vets told the owner even if he survived, he might not be able to walk again.
For nearly five weeks, Dexter had a fixator attached to his jaw and his owner hand-fed him.
But, Dexter’s miraculous recovery left everyone amazed.
Ruth said: “Incredibly, Dexter is now set to make a full recovery, and to look at him you’d never know anything had happened.point 211 |
It’s been a terrifying ordeal for all of us, we’re still recovering emotionally from what happened, but Dexter’s patient determination has been an inspiration.point 142 | ”point 145 | 1
“We’re amazed at how well he’s healed and recovered, he’s our little miracle cat.”
Ruth entered Dexter in the competition for the world to know how brave he is. However, she never expected him to win.
She said: “I’m over the moon, it’s an amazing end to what has been an incredibly difficult year for us all.”
Dexter has made a full recovery and is living happily with his owners.
