Celebrities Outraged Over Alabama Abortion Ban Shared Personal Stories And Powerful Messages

More and more celebrities are speaking out against Alabama near-total ban on abortions, with some even sharing their own abortion stories.

Rihanna slammed the state senators who voted in approval of the draconian bill, calling them ‘idiots.’

‘Take a look. these are the idiots making decisions for WOMEN in America. Governor Kay Ivey…SHAME ON YOU!!!!’ the singer from Barbados tweeted on Thursday.

Her tweet also had a picture of all 25 senators from Alabama who voted in favor of the abortion ban.

Governor Ivey signed the bill into law on Wednesday.

The new law will criminalize abortions even in the cases of rape and incest. The doctors who carry out the procedure could face up to 99 years in jail, as per the new law.

Conservatives proposed legislation to restrict abortion rights this year in 16 US states in a bid to take down Roe v Wade verdict – the landmark 1973 Supreme Court ruling which gave women the right to terminate a pregnancy.

After the legislation was approved, celebrities across the nation spoke out against it, and many even shared their own personal experiences.

Social media users also started sharing their abortion stories after talk show host Busy Philipps called on them to speak up and ‘end the shame’.

Launching the hashtag #youknowme, the 39-year-old tweeted: ‘1 in 4 women have had an abortion. Many people think they don’t know someone who has, but #youknowme.

‘So let’s do this: if you are also the 1 in 4, let’s share it and start to end the shame. Use #youknowme and share your truth.’

Minka Kelly shared her abortion experience, describing it as the smartest decision she could’ve made.

‘When I was younger I had an abortion,’ Kelly wrote in a lengthy Instagram post.

‘It was the smartest decision I could’ve made, not only for myself & my boyfriend at the time, but also for this unborn fetus.

‘For a baby to’ve been born to two people – too young and completely ill equipped – with no means or help from family, would have resulted in a child born into an unnecessary world of struggle.

‘Having a baby at that time would have only perpetuated the cycle of poverty, chaos and dysfunction I was born into.’

‘Hope the people of Alabama who want the abortion ban are up for donating their money and space to the MEGA influx of kids in need of care, coming your way,’ she wrote on social media.

Lady Gaga tweeted that the new law was ‘an outrage.’

‘So there’s a higher penalty for doctors who perform these operations than for most rapists?’ the singer wrote.

Actor, politician, and activist Cynthia Nixon tweeted how her mother had an ‘illegal’ and ‘harrowing’ abortion before it was legalized.

‘In 2010, my wife had a legal abortion after we found out her pregnancy was not viable,’ she continued.

Actor Milla Jovovich revealed her own traumatic abortion experience, outlining how women could be so vulnerable.

‘It was one of the most horrific experiences I have ever gone through,’ she wrote on her Instagram. ‘I was alone and helpless.

‘When I think about the fact that women might have to face abortions in even worse conditions than I did because of new laws, my stomach turns.’

Emman Watson said the new law won’t stop women from having abortions.

‘It will just mean they are forced to do so unsafely and with stigma,’ the Beauty and the Beast star wrote in a lengthy post on Instagram.

Ellen DeGeneres tweeted her support for the women, saying women should decide the matters about their bodies.

‘I stand with the women in Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, and everywhere, who have the right to decide what happens to their bodies, as we all do,’ she wrote.
